Megaformer™ or Reformer?

Megaformer™ or Reformer?

Megaformer or Reformer? Which one is right for me?

If you’re a Pilates convert like us, then it’s only natural that you immediately love anything Pilates related! However, we often get questions regarding why we only sell and teach on Reformers and not Megaformers, and which machine may be best for you.

The reason is quite simple… we are all about making Pilates accessible and we find that Reformer Pilates is the best way to help more people get started on their Pilates journey as it is less complex whilst still delivering a sweaty session that tones and lengthens. Typically, classes that use Megaformers are suited to seasoned professionals and advanced users due to their higher intensity and involvement of a lot of weight bearing exercises which doesn’t translate well to all clients. Reformers in contrast, can provide more variations of exercises to build strength, mobility, flexibility and can even support someone well into their aging years, making it a great tool for someone to feel confident using at home.

What are the main differences between Megaformer™ and Reformer?

The Megaformer and the Pilates Reformer are both exercise machines that can help you build strength and flexibility, but they have different uses and features. A Megaformer workout is certainly more intense, with a focus on sculpting, heart rate raising and becoming stronger, whilst some argue that the Reformer is more focused on posture improvement, mobility and injury prevention. These are certainly true with the Reformer, however Pilates with a Megaformer or Reformer machine both increase strength as the modern styles of athletic Reformer also caters for those looking for a higher intensity workout. A Reformer tends to focus on leaner, tighter muscles through more repetitions, whereas the Megaformer has more of a focus on strength building through muscular exhaustion.

What I love most about teaching Reformer Pilates is that I can certainly push and challenge those that are physically able and wanting more out of their workout, whilst empowering someone who may be more of a beginner, or nursing an injury in that same class.

It’s the variety that I believe keeps people coming back! Reformer Pilates can offer something for you no matter how you are feeling on the day - whether you are wanting a relaxing, mindful flow or a sweaty, muscle-targeting workout. It truly is a mind body connective movement that has the added bonus of assisting with mental clarity and wellness.

Which machine should I get for my home?

I do believe there is room for both a Megaformer and a Reformer workout in your routine, particularly if you LOVE Pilates as much as we do.

However, it is important to factor the above considerations regarding which machine suits your goals and capabilities, as well as space availability within your home and your budget for the purchase.

Space tends to be a key factor for all of our clients, and this is why The Original Folding model is our leading Reformer on the market. Megaformers are what they sound, they are large and require plenty of space - something that most of us don’t have the luxury of - so it is important to consider practicality when investing in a Pilates machine for your home.

Which machine should I get for my business?

From a business standpoint, the size of a Megaformer, combined with the additional cost and complexity can make the purchase decision harder, especially considering capital availability and square footage of your area.

When looking to complete the installation of your Pilates machines, it is also important to consider the type of clientele you would like to attract and retain. Are you looking to target a specific niche such as experienced users, or are you wanting to service a wider demographic of Pilates enthusiasts?

Another consideration is staffing. Not all instructors can teach a Megaformer class, so recruitment is a factor to keep in mind when selecting the machinery for your business.
